About Parent to Parent FSN-HC

Mission

We provide support, education and caring connections to families who: have children with diverse physical, emotional, intellectual or health needs; have a child born prematurely, or are grieving the loss of a child.

Our Vision

  • To reach and support every family in need
  • To be a caring, compassionate organization that is:
    • Deeply integrated into the communities we serve
    • Creating lasting, positive impact
    • Increasing understanding and acceptance of individuals with diverse abilities and special needs
  • We believe one of the greatest assets any child can have is a strong, supportive family
  • All children have unique abilities and gifts to share
  • Every child deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential
  • When families need support, one of the most powerful resources is another family
  • We all share responsibility in building caring, inclusive communities that create opportunities for all children
  • True change happens when families have the tools they need — and the belief that their child’s potential can be realized

History

Parent to Parent Family Support Network of the High Country is a unique, grant- and donor-supported community outreach program housed within the Appalachian Institute for Health and Wellness at Appalachian State University.

For over 30 years, we’ve been a trusted resource for families and professionals seeking support, information, and connection related to disabilities, chronic health conditions, premature birth, and more. Our services are always free and confidential, and we are proud to serve the following seven-county region:
Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Mitchell, Watauga, Wilkes, and Yancey.

We are:

  • A proud affiliate of the Family Support Network of North Carolina
  • Rooted in collaboration, ensuring we complement—not duplicate—existing services
  • Guided by a dedicated advisory council of parents and professionals
  • Built on a foundation laid in 1988, through a joint effort among families, FSN-NC, the Boone Developmental Evaluation Center, and App State’s Department of Language, Reading, and Exceptionalities

We’ve been walking alongside families in the High Country for decades—and we’re here for you, too.
